British racer Daniel Hegarty died after a horror crash at the Macau Grand Prix. The crash occured on lap six at Fishermen’s Bend. He died on the way before reaching the hospital.
After losing his helmet, he crashed into the barriers at the Fishermen’s Bend on the 3.8-mile Guia Circuit.
The race was stopped after the sixth lap and Northern Ireland’s Glenn Irwin was declared the winner. After the race Irwin said that “This is not a celebration, It’s a very sad end to what has been a successful week.”
In 2016 Daniel Hegarty said “I find it hard with my children because my oldest son is nine years old now and he understands things and he can go on YouTube himself and get facts and statistics, like how many riders have died in the years,”
Broadcaster TDM said that 2012 was the last time a rider died at the Macau race that was Portuguese Luis Carreira who also crashed at the same bend. They also added that Mr Hegarty was the 16th person to die on the Circuito da Gula since the Macau race’s debut in 1954.
The race organisers said that : “Daniel’s family have been contacted, and the committee will ensure every assistance is extended to them.”
