Barcelona’s Lionel Messi won the European Golden Shoe award topping the European league goal scoring 37 goals in 2016-17 Season. This is his fourth golden shoe and it makes him equal to Cristiano Ronaldo.
Messi had agreed to a new deal until 2021 in July, announced by Barcelona. but the forward has not yet signed the contract himself. Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu in September, confirmed that the deal consisting of three contracts, one with the player’s foundation, another regarding image rights and then the employment contract has been signed by Messi’s father.
On Friday Messi was presented with his fourth Golden Shoe award at the Antiga Fabrica Estrella Damm in Barcelona, but he avoided questions about his contract. Marca director Juan Ignacio Gallardo introduced the ceremony and said that “it is not the day to talk about Messi’s contract”.
Messi said “Individual prizes always comes from collective efforts, This prize is for everyone, Without my teammates, I wouldn’t be able to win this, it’s down to the group”. Messi scored 37 La Liga goals last season and for which he earned him the prize for the fourth time. Just behind him there was Sporting Lisbon’s Bas Dost (34) and Borussia Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (31).
Messi also said that ” I don’t consider myself a striker but I have the luck to score the goals which give me these awards.”
