Indian ace boxing legend M C Mary Kom (48kg) clinched an unprecedented fifth gold medal at the Asian Boxing Championship in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam today(08/11/2017). She had won a bronze medal in the 2012 London Olympics. She will be turning 35 on November 25. This is Mary Kom’s first international gold medal since the 2014 Asian Games and her win today was against a younger rival.
She won the gold medal for India in the Asian Boxing Championships in the Light Flyweight category, defeating North Korea’s Kim Hyang Mi in the final bout courtesy of a 5-0 by unanimous judges decision in her favour.
In the first round, both the boxers began by looking to attack and get an early lead. Mary Kom landed a number of strikes but Kim didn’t back down and got in a few punches of her own before the round finished. Hyang Mi was Mary Kom’s most aggressive opponent so far in the tournament but Mary Kom didnt seem to tensed but she played with ease. The second and third rounds were less aggressive, as Mary Kom took enough time before offensive strikes. She showed her defensive capability in the game well enough as she fended off her challenger whilst also landing a few punches at the opportunity.
Mary Kom after her victory expressed her joy in her win and said that she is really happy the way the Championship ended and dedicated the victory to all those who have supported her and thanked her coaching staff who worked hard with her over the last few months.
Many felt that the celebrated ace Indian boxer Mary Kom was done with the ring after failing to make it to the 2016 Rio Olympics. However, her win in the final of the Asian Women’s Boxing Championships has shown that she is still the champion of women’s boxing in India and proved herself to everyone who made her feel that the world had wriiten her off.
Congratulations Mary Kom, icon of Manipur and of India, for winning the gold medal at the Asian Boxing Championship. You make us prouder with every punch #PresidentKovind
