India’s badminton sensation Kidambi Srikanth achieved a career-best ranking of World No 2 on Thursday.
Indian shuttler Kidambi Srikanth on Thursday achieved his career best second position in Badminton World Federation(BWF) ranking. The 25-year-old shuttler jumped two places and is now only behind Victor Axelson of Denmark in the men’s singles ranking with 73,403 points.
This season so far is tremendous for Srikanth as he reached five superseries final this year, in which he won four titles. He is only the fourth player ever and first Indian to achieve this run a calendar year. The other three who achieved the same are Lin Dan (China), Lee Chong Wei (Malaysia) and Chen Long (China).
Srikanth is just 4527 points far from Axelson, which he can grab if he continues the winning streak in upcoming superseries at Hong Kong and China.
Srikanth’s rise over the past 18 months included a successful 2016, in which he won two gold medals in the men’s team and men’s singles of the 2016 South Asian Games, followed by reaching the quarter-finals of the Rio Olympics.
On Wednesday, Srikanth was also recommended for the Padma Shri by the former Sports Minister Vijay Goel.
Along with Srikanth’s domination, it is also notable that his co-player HS Prannoy also clinched his career-best ranking at No.11.
Prannoy has consistently performed well on the circuit beating the likes of Lee Chong Wei and Chen Long this year, even winning the US Open against fellow Indian Parupalli Kashyap.
