Messi scored his 100th goal in European competition in match against Olympiakos
Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi joins the 100 goal club along with his rival and Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo. Lionel Messi scored his 100th goal in European competition as Barcelona maintained their perfect record in Group D with a 3-1 victory over Olympiakos.
Even though Barcelona were reduced to 10 men at the second half as Gerrard Pique was sent off after being deemed to have intentionally redirected the ball into the Olympiakos goal with his hand just before halftime. But at the second half it was Messi who secured the team from losing as he scored the second goal of the team and his landmark goal from a textbook freekick at 61st minute.
It was his 97th goal in the Champions League. His other three came in the UEFA Super Cup.
“I hope he can get to 200 by the end of this season,” joked Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde after Messi took his tally to 15 goals in all competitions less than two months into the campaign.
82 of Messi’s 100 goals have come from his natural left foot and 14 have been courtesy of his right foot while just four is from headers, including his memorable goal against Manchester United in the 2009 final.
Barcelona remains top in Champions League Group D with nine points. The second leg of the game will be played in Olympiakos home ground in two weeks. A Win at Olympiakos will make them in the last 16.
