Rain, sightscreen issues, animals running on to the field ,wet outfield and bad light has stopped a match before,On Friday a bizzare incident stopped a Ranji Trophy match because a man drove his car on to the field of play in New Delhi.
The incident took place at 4.40pm, 20 minutes from close of play after the match officials took the half hour extension to make up for the over-rate.The man claimed that he didn’t see any security and was merely lost,despite what looked like deliberate swerves to drive over the pitch twice, completely ignoring attempts from players and umpires to stop him.
It is the first incident of its kind, a Delhi resident, named Girish Sharma, from Buddh Vihar locality came driving down his Wagon R car in full speed and through main gate of the Airforce ground, which only allows entry of cars after proper checking remained open with the security not in his position.
It was the third day of the match between Delhi and Uttar Pradesh at the Air Force Sports Complex in Palam.A number of prominent players such as Ishant Sharma, Gautam Gambhir and Suresh Raina are playing in the match. The match was shifted to the Palam ground from Feroz Shah Kotla due to India’s scheduled T20I against New Zealand.
The security personnel at the ground swung into action after this and closed the gate in order to stop the man from fleeing.
