Shreyas Iyer was named in the playing eleven against New Zealand, this would be Iyers debut for India. He has been named in the Test, ODI and T20Is squads on various tours but could never find a place in the playing eleven. The first of the three match T20I series is at New Delhi’s Feroz Shah Kotla stadium.

Iyers has been Mumbai’s most consistent batsmen in the Ranji Trophy over the past two years. He has  won the Emerging Player of the Year award in 2015 in the Indian Premier League with Delhi Daredevils. The 22-year-old recently led the India ‘A’ team to series wins against South Africa. He scored a 131-ball 140 in the final game against South Africa ‘A’.

Iyer will be playing in the number 4 position.India has been struggling to find a suitable one candidate for the position. Lately, Manish Pandey, Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul, Dinesh Karthik and even MS Dhoni have played in the position. India have played 10 different players in the position since the 2015 World Cup.

“I think I am very flexible. I don’t mind batting at any number. Even in Indian Premier League (IPL) this year, I was shuffled from number four to number three. It did not really matter to as I am comfortable,” Iyer said during the press meet before the match.

New Zealand are the no.1 team in the world in T20I and India has never beat them in any of the T20I games played against them so far

Iyer’s international career begins at the end of Ashish Nehra’s.
